Renovations
Work inside an apartment needs approval before it begins. Approval protects the building's systems and your neighbors, and it makes sure everyone working in the building is insured.
When approval is needed
In condominiums and co-ops, most work beyond painting and small repairs goes to the board for approval. That includes kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, and anything that touches plumbing, electrical or walls. Renters should ask us in writing before making any change to the apartment. When in doubt, ask us first.
What to include
- A drawing of the room or rooms as they are today
- A drawing of the proposed changes, showing where plumbing and electrical work will go
- Your signed agreement with your contractor
- Certificates of insurance from your contractor and any subcontractors
- Licenses for the plumber and electrician, where their work is involved
- Permits from the city, where the work requires them
- The signed alteration agreement for your building
- The alteration deposit, if your building requires one
We review each package for completeness and send it to the board once everything is in hand. A complete package is the quickest path to an answer.
Your alteration agreement
The alteration agreement for your building is in the Documents section of your resident portal. If you cannot find it, write to info@block.nyc and we will send it.
